Covid-19: A devastating hit to the educational sector

Since late March 2020, the ministry of education has suspended the schools in Syria, as a precautious response to the pandemic spreading worldwide. However, missing half a semester is a significant hit to education. It will take many students a lot of time and effort to catch up. Specially that we do not have the option of moving to online learning, since majority of students don’t have access neither to internet nor to computer devices, let alone the lack of electricity itself which is a big problem. The longer the closure of educational facilities continues, the greater the damage on the educational and development process becomes. Leaving us, when this is all over, with an additional responsibility of filling the gap of learning inequalities that has been widened due to the schools’ closing as a result of Coronavirus pandemic.

Relief work continues with safety measurements

Overwhelmed by the economic burdens of nearly a decade of war and sanctions, the economic impact of Coronavirus pandemic became as much exhausting as its effect on the public health department. Reluctant between two options; whether to postpone the financial aid distributions for social distancing reasons, or to continue in order to reduce the financial troubles that suffocated our society (due to the high prices and suspension of businesses), a compromise was reached. The partners took the responsibility of continuing the distributions, but with the implementation of safety measurements to ensure the health and safety of all beneficiaries. Some partners extended the distribution period to avoid massive gatherings, others chose to change the location into open spaces to mitigate the spread as much as possible. Of course, all volunteers were wearing masks and gloves, in addition to using sanitizers regularly.
